something for the pocket

Owen has commented several times that his favorite place to play in his classroom is the Nature Table. I have to admit that this particular table is very inviting and wonderful. It is nestled in a corner behind his teacher's rocking chair, and filled with little people, animals, drift wood pieces, silks... he just sits over there and plays out all that his little imagination allows. He is quite fond of the little pocket sized people on the table, and was delighted when his teacher used some during their story time the other day.

I decided that I might just be able to re-create one of these sweet little pocket-sized dolls for him at home. I used this tutorial for tying and shaping a Waldorf doll head, but made it about 3/4" diameter. A little piece of panty-hose for the inner head tubing, skin colored jersey for the face, small embroidered eyes and mouth, and wool felt body and hat.

Cute as can be, and the perfect size for a pocket!

But the tricky thing about a pocket is, things can fall out of them. I made the doll over the course of the day today, and Owen lost his little friend on the course of a nature walk this afternoon. Big tears were shed at bedtime. Poor guy...

We walked the trail and looked for the doll, but a 2.5" green doll is hard to spot out in the woods.

Looks like I will be busy making another pocket friend tomorrow. It might not be the last one.
