Sk8ter boy

He has been asking for a skateboard for about a year. I keep putting it off, telling him a skateboard is a good thing for a 5 year old. Now he says nearly everyday that he can't wait to be five, so he can get a skateboard.... and I gently say "let's just enjoy being four for now".

So a couple of days ago we were out for our stroll around the neighborhood... an almost daily occurrence, when we spotted a (very) large pile of trash on a neighbors driveway awaiting the trash man. I am a sucker for finding "treasure", so we made our way down the street to see what there was to see.

Now backing up a bit... We have an evening ritual of telling a "Frankie and Lola" story before bed most nights. Frankie and Lola are two little mice that live in the wall behind the kitchen of a very nice family. They go on adventures such as trips to the library, and play dates in the forest with their friend, Mr. Raccoon. It happened that one day not so long ago, Frankie found a skateboard in the trash near their home, and he & Lola brought it home, fixed it up, painted it red, and now they use it to get to all the places they want to go.

Fast forward again to our walk and the trash pile. When we are about three house from the trash pile Owen says "Hey Mommy, I bet there will be a skateboard in there, just like the one that Frankie found!" So what is the first thing I see as we approach the driveway???... I kid you not! There was a skateboard sticking out of the trash can, a rough board with no wheels, but a skateboard none the less. What is a mommy to do?! You cannot turn down good treasure, and you cannot disappoint a boy who is smiling from ear to ear in amazement!

Still in disbelief, I pull the board out of the pile, and we carry it home to assess, and show Daddy. Dave thinks it is fixable, so we set to work on figuring out what we need. Wheels, bindings, deck tape, and a good sanding should do the trick.

Today we sanded the deck, went on an outing to our local skate park to watch the "bigger boys" and ask a few questions if we could find a teenager cool enough to talk with a 4 year old. We did. and Owen was in awe.

Next week we will be visiting the library to find books on skateboarding, and making a trip to the skate store. Might need to look into some full body padding, too.

Little brother is quite excited, too... but you will have to wait little one, this mommy is not ready for that.

And some Link-Love for you to enjoy!

I am drooling over these prints. I need one on my freshly painted walls, but can't decide which one!

I am thinking about making some quilt squares for this Anna Maria Horner project. I love making quilt squares, and love helping those in need. I think it is right up my alley... want to join me?
